During my senior year of college, I interned in the PR department at Sports Illustrated. Each Tuesday morning, I'd get the pages of that week's magazine, and spend the day writing a five-page preview press release for fax distribution to approximately 1,700 media outlets. (Magazines and faxes. I sound old.)

Before printing out the release, I'd hand my floppy disk to Publicity Director Roger Jackson for editing. I'd stand behind him as he'd cut … and cut … and cut some more. It was humbling at first, but learning to be concise made me so much better.

Before sending your next e-mail, publishing a webpage, or posting on LinkedIn, reread and edit. You can probably communicate more with less.
